F.H.E. In The World But Not Of It

I thought that I would share this weeks FHE lesson because it was a hit for the kids.  I lucked out yesterday when I happened to come across this lesson idea when I was searching for Activity Day ideas.  I will give the quick version but if you want the entire lesson including scriptures and questions to ask, go to Your Life Uncommon Blog.  Isn't the internet such a great resource that we can get so many different ideas for lessons?  Love it!!

IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF IT
  • All you need for this lesson is a mason jar, some water, some oil, food coloring (preferably red), and a flashlight.
  • The water in the jar will represent THE WORLD (basically things that are not of the world: pride, envy, etc.).
  • Now pour some oil in the jar which will represent Us.  We all know that oil and water don't mix.  This will be the same for US if we aren't doing the things of THE WORLD.
  • Now add some drops of food coloring which represent the SINS OF THE WORLD (now you see why red would be a good color to use).  The oil repels the food coloring and goes straight through and colors the water.  This would be like US when we sometimes sin and need to repent.  After we repent we too can be clean and clear again and unstained.
(Ignore the flowered sheet on the window.  The blinds are broken right now and are in the process of getting fixed.)
  • When the bottle has settled shine the flashlight through the top half of the bottle (oil) and then the bottom half of the bottle (stained water).  Notice the difference?  The light is able to shine through the oil but is unable to shine through the stained water.  If we follow all the commandments and do what our Heavenly Father has asked us, and use the repentance process for the times that we need to, we will have the light of Christ with us all the time.  We can "shine" so brightly that we can be examples to everyone around us.
